Question
My 5th metatarsal mid-shaft is "hanging by a thread". Fixation is not an option due to my osteoporosis.  Is it possible for the bones to heal with a large displacement?
Can I ever walk and live a normal life with a broken 5th metatarsal?  Are there any other options for me?  I am very concerned.  Please help.  Thanks.

Answer
Betty,

Why is fixation not an option?

I understand that you have osteoporosis, however, there are external fixation devices, bone stimulators and other treatments that may be possible.

With a large gap in the bone you may not heal and end up with constant pain.

What type of Dr. are you seeing.  Perhaps a secons opinion is needed.  You will need to find a Dr that deals with complex foot fractures and has used the methods discussed above.

Please seek some other options.

Sincerely,
