QuestionHi! I'm 42 y/o and female. The 4th toe on each foot is curved/curling to the side and slightly under my 3rd toes.(Not real pretty!!) My toe is actually numb or "dead" on my left foot.(It's about a 2inch long area, running down the ligament or tendon from left,4th toe) My question is this...
Is it possible to get those toes "straightened" by surgery, and if so,explain procedure and would insurance cover this? Also, what about recovery?
Thanks!
Melanie
AnswerMelanie,
The curled toe can certainly be fixed and straightened. Depending on the toe deformity, you will likely require some bone removal and possible release or lengthening of tendons.
You may also need some alterations to the skin which may be contracted. It really depends on the severity of the deformity.
You will likely have stitches in the toe for 10 days. You will be in a surgical shoe for several weeks. You can then ease into a soft shoe. You are able to walk with the surgical shoe.
Insurance will cover the procedure if you have discomfort. It doesn't sound like this is purely a cosmetic procedure.
I would see a Podiatrist and have x-rays and exam. Find a Podiatrist that has experience correcting this type of deformity.
Good Luck.
