Question
Dear Doc,
Age 30. (accident occured 3 years ago)
I was operated for a corrective surgery due to a fracture of the lower left leg (the front and the back bones were broken and a rod was inserted). I was walking on sticks for a period of 1 year and the body weight was supported entirely by my right leg. now that I am able to walk properly without sticks and has gained dexterity of both my legs.
the problem I face now is pain in the lower hip portion of my right side. I also have numbness on the right side of my body. I feel that my body has become quite weak on my right side. I do a lot of travelling now a days. please tell me have I developed symptoms of a paralysis of the right side. I have occassional pains on the right hip (lower) and numbness of the right legs.

Answer
Subramanian,

After a major injury of the leg, you may develop abnormalities of the hip and spine.

It is possible that you have a pinched nerve or bulging disc in the back that is causing weakness in the leg and the right side of the body.

I would see your primary Dr. for a general checkup and see a neurologist for the weakness and possibly an orthopedic surgeon for the hip problem.  Typically, your primary Dr. can order x-rays and MRI of the hip and spine and then refer you to a specialist.

You may require physical therapy or other treatments.
