Pain and swelling on the top of foot

Question
I have been experiencing pain and swelling on the top and medial side of my foot for the past 2 weeks.  I do not recall injuring or dropping anything on it.  I have visited my Dr. and they did an xray, it was normal.  I am to see a specialist this next week.  Can you give me some idea of what it could be and what type of treatment I should expect?  Also should I be trying to stay off of it as much as possible?  It hurts in a resting position as well as when I walk.

Answer
Hi Jerah,

You may have strained a foot muscle or tendon and this could cause the pain and swelling.  However, a metatarsal stress fracture may happen without an injury and may not show on x-ray until healing begins.

I would stay off of your foot.  Use an Ace bandage and apply ice to the area several times per day for about ten minutes.

I would see a Podiatrist for evaluation.  At times, an MRI may be helpful for soft tissue problems.  If it is a sprain/strain, physical therapy may be helpful.

Other possible causes could be a condition known as gout or an infection of the foot.  So seeing a specialist is a smart move.
