QuestionDr. Katz-
I have a sharp pain/burning sensation on the outer and under side of my right foot just below my small toe. I think it started with a cheap pair of running shoes while running on a treadmill. It hurts/burns the most when I run, but also sometimes when I am walking or doing nothing at all. Any ideas? Can I fix this problem by seeing a running shoe specialist?
Thanks,
Adam
AnswerHi Adam,
Sounds like you irritated the soft tissue and injured the nerve on the side of the foot. There is a small chance that you could have a stress fracture. If this has been present for several weeks, I would see a Podiatrist for an exam.
I will start my patients with ice and anti-inflammatories. If the problem is severe I will send them for physical therapy.
The shoe is the most important aspect that is overlooked. Some patients improve just from a shoe change. So, that's the first step.
