QuestionHi, I have an annoying neuroma in my right foot and now have one starting in my left. I'm a tri-athlete and although a don't run a lot of massive distance, I was told that getting injections with the aid of a scope or MRI would be helpful. I've add four to five injections in my right foot and also have custom orthotics which help some but it gets extremely painful at times. Still can't wear nice shoes or run long distance. Would your freezing procedure eliminate the neurome completely? Are there complications/risks???
AnswerHi Cheryl,
An MRI is helpful in identifying a neuroma but not necessary. A good exam will provide the best diagnosis. There would be no reason to have a guided injection with a scope or scan. If your Dr. can't locate the nerve, then I would pass on any treatment. However, if you've had 5 already it would not be medically sound to have anymore. You will start to get breakdown of the fat padding on the bottom of your foot beyond 3 injections. Orthotics are a good idea.
The Cryosurgery is an excelllent option. The nerve is frozen but will regenerate over time, usually with a more normal structure. There are complications and risks with any procedure however, this is minimally invasive and tends to rarely have problems. See my site below for more info.
I would recommend finding someone in your area that is a certified Cryosurgeon and consult with that Dr. If you are in the Tampa area I would be happy to see you.
Hope that helps.
