Question
Hello Dr. Katz,

I was playing Football(Soccer) about 10 days ago and I was kicked in the foot very hard by another player. The kick was right where my big toe phalange meets my big toe metatarsal. My foot swelled only slightly, however I believe my metatarsal may be bruised as was difficult to bend my foot for the first 5-6 days. My foot does not hurt unless I walk and it hurts less the more I walk (if that makes any sense).

My question is, how long does an injury like this typically take to heal, what is the best way to treat it and should I have any other concerns?

Kind Regards,
Jonathan

Answer
Hi Jonathan,

You have strained and possibly torn the soft tissue and this may ease as you walk.  However, I would be concerned that you may have damaged the cartilage in the joint or even have a fracture.   Due to your activity level, it would be wise to have an exam and x-ray.  Damage to the joint can lead to chronic pain and arthritis.  You may require anti-inflammatories or more involved treatment.

I would see a Podiatrist.
