Right ankle swelling/numbness

Question
Periodically when I use the treadmill at the gym, my right foot and ankle swell and go numb (this happened just this morning once again, and thus my concern).  There is some pain involved in this, but it seems that it is mostly due to the swelling.  I've tried varying the incline, and walking faster or slower, but nothing seems to relieve it until I stop walking.  It does seem that walking at a really slow pace is somewhat easier. The swelling usually lasts for a few days up to a couple of weeks and then goes away for a stretch of time. This also occasionally happens to the left foot as well, but seems to be primarily occuring on the right side.  I am only 31 and have gone to the gym most of my adult life.  I just don't understand what is happening. This has gone on for about three years or so now. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Poe,

The foot and ankle pain and swelling usually occur from overuse and abnormal position of the foot and ankle.  Numbness occurs when there is swelling around the nerve or pressure on the nerve from either bone or soft tissue structures.  The treadmill often leads to problems, you may find that using an elliptical trainer may be better.

I would also see a Podiatrist for a foot and ankle exam.  You may benefit from orthotic devices/custom arch supports.

I would also recommend stretching and a warm up prior to starting the treadmill.
