QuestionHi Dr. Katz,
This is the first real foot injury that I have ever had. After walking on the hard beach sand for several hours, my arches (which are very high) started to hurt. Since then, I have had intense pain on the outside of both of my ankles. I also feel a clicking or catching in that area. It hurts when I step on the outside of my foot and I can see some swelling below my ankle bone. It has not improved in several days. What can ease the pain?
AnswerHi Sarah,
Foot apin from walking in the sand is the result of walking on an uneven unstable surface. It is common to strain the tendons behind the ankle and in the foot. The popping may be the tendon slipping out of place or could be from excess joint fluid.
I would see a podiatrist for an evaluation and treatment. Don't let this linger too long. In the meantime I would apply ice and decrease activities. Wear supportive shoes.
Sincerely,
