QuestionHello,
I just completed a marathon three days ago and I have concerns about my foot. About 15 miles in, I began to notice a fairly sharp pain in the upper part of my foot on the medial side, around the area of the medial side of my navicular bone. It is somewhat sore to the touch, but not extremely. When walking around in sandals with no socks or arch support, I barely notice anything, but I become conscious of it if I change the position of my foot when wearing shoes or even just socks. When walking, it feels like something is bulging out in that area with each step and it is moderately painful. I have tried to visualize this phenomenon, but cannot. The first day after the race, I thought that wearing shoes with the orthotics that I ran in (Rx, six months old) would help, but it was MUCH worse.
I am a big guy (6'7", 230), and this is the second marathon I've run in a month.
Thanks for your help.
AnswerHi Max,
It is fairly common to have strain of the tendon that connects to the navicular bone (posterior tibial tendon) with excessive activity.
My concern after a marathon would be that you may have torn part of the tendon or possibly developed a stress fracture of the navicular.
I would see a Podiatrist. If you wait to long these become harder to treat.
