QuestionI'm a 49-year-old male, 5' 10" & about 190 lbs. Two weeks ago I broke the 2nd through 4th metatarsals in my right foot - closer to the toes that the tarsal. The second metatarsal apparently was pretty badly broken with a chunk about 3/8" crushed across most of the cross section of the bone. A podiatrist performed surgery a few days later, and now I have metal rods sticking out of my feet. I know that so much depends on so much, but from the description of the injury, how would you rate my chances for a recovery the results in normal operation of my foot with no pain? Was a podiatrist the right choice, rather than an orthopedic surgeon?
AnswerHi Chris,
Sorry to hear about the foot injury.
In my opinion, a podiatrist is the appropriate choice if they are trained in this type of injury. Many podiatrists do have this training.
Some orthopedic surgeons do this type of procedure. However, a podiatrist is more knowledgeable ane better trained when the foot is involved.
As far as recovery, you should do well. I would highly recommend physical therapy when your doctor feels that you are ready. I would also consider custom shoe inserts after you have healed. Your metatarsal bones should heal without difficulty. However if there is some alignment problem at the joint this could lead to arthritis. Typically there will be some alignment problems with your injury. Also the soft tissue may take a longer time to heal.
My best advice would be to follow all instructions from your doctor and give the area time to heal.
Good Luck.
Sincerely,
