Toe and ankle problems

Question
Hello,

My name is John, and I'm 16. recently over the past few months, my right ankle has popped constantly with every step, and it seems to get worse throughout the day and gets its loudest at nights. What could be the problem for this? And also, some of my toes on my right foot lock up occasionally(1-2 times/month), and its impossible to move them from their locked position unless I grab them and force them out. and even after a few seconds after that, they go back to the locked state. This is also very painful, and last for a few minutes.

Are either of these a serious problem? I've been wanting to get them checked out soon, but I want an expert opinion first.

And as a background, I'm not a big guy at all. I'm 5'9'', and 120-125 pounds. I would be considered lanky-skinny. I just figured this information would help for a scratch diagnosis.

But please write back as soon as it's convenient for you.

-John-

Answer
Hi John,

Popping of the ankle and toe joints is usually caused by the fluid in the joint moving rapidly from some motion.  Usually not considered a problem.  If you are having pain, there may be a problem with the alignment and structure of your foot that should be treated.

I would see a podiatrist and have an x-ray and consider custom orthotic devices to help realign the foot and ankle.
