Question
HI I'm a 37 yo female who recently underwent peroneal tendon surgery.  I am now experienceing pain and swelling in my PTT.  I have had an MRI, which says there is fluid in my PTT and that I have DJD in my big toe. I wear orthotics that don't seem to give me any releif.  What is the fluid in my tendon and what kind of treatments are there that will help eliviate my pain and swelling?  I'm at my final straw!

Answer
Hi Carol,

I'm assuming that you are talking about your posterior tibial tendon at the ankle or arch area.

Whenever you have surgery on tendons in the foot, other tendons have to work overtime to support the foot.  The fluid would indicate that the foot tendons are overworked and strained and therefore accumulaing fluid.

I would consider two treatments.  It would be very important for you have physical therapy to have a better recovery.  Also, I would consider reevaluation of teh orthotics to make sure that you have enough support in the arch.  For now ice is helpful.

Good Luck.
