pain after bunion surgery

Question
Dear Dr. Katz
I had bunion surgery on my left foot 12/03/2007 and on my right foot 03/03/2008. I don't know the exact name of the surgery, but I know they removed the bunion and put a pin in the big toe.
I am a cashier, so I am on my feet a lot. The pain I had before the surgery wasn't in the bunion. If you made a line from the bunion across the top of my foot, that was where the pain was.
Since the surgery, the pain has not improved. Is it something that will just take more time? I realize it is to soon to know for my right foot, but it has been 4 months since the surgery in my left foot, and I don't see any impovement in the pain level.
Thank you
Janet

Answer
Hi Janet,

Recovery from bunion surgery can take many months especially if you are working on it to soon.  It would be hard for me to evaluate how you will heal since I have not examined your foot.  However, if you had no bunion pain, I'm not sure why you had the surgery.  Did you have any other treatments?

I would recommend physical therapy and custom arch supports as soon as possible to get you healing quicker.

I would also consider seeking another opinion if the problem remains.

Sincerely,

Marc Katz, DPM
