Discomfort in Left Foot

Question
Sept last year I stepped into a small hole at a park and rolled my ankle and fell. I do not recall if I rolled it outwards or inwards. It was painful but I put it down to just a sprain. I didnt do anything further about it. But its been sometime now and I still experience swelling on the inside of my foot and the discomfort is still there daily. By the end of the day my foot hurts and sometimes throbs. The pain is located on the inside of my foot at the top of my arch. There is also some swelling.

I went to my GP and had x-rays which showed no fractures. I am now being sent to a specialist with the talk of an MRI. I dont feel that I am getting any real answers and its costing me alot of money. Is this something that will heal itself - should i just cope with it until then? Strap it up? Could this be more than a sprain and need more serious attention?

Appreciate all your advise.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Fiona,

It is common after an ankle and foot sprian or injury to end up with damaged or entrapped nerves which cause chronic pain.  There is also a condition know as sinus tarsi syndrome that can occur.  In these cases we will often inject the area to give relief and to diagnose the problem.  I believe an MRI is reasonable.  However, you need to see a podiatrits that look beyond the typical problems and come up with a diagnosis.
