Question
Hi Dr.Katz,
I had cryosurgery done 8 days ago on my left foot for morton's neuroma. I am still bruised and swollen and I am not able to put much pressure on my forefoot without experiencing sharp pain, similar to the neuroma pain.I am still limping and I am worried that perhaps the surgery was unsuccessful or made things worse. I called the office and was told due to the bruising it can be painful, my follow up appt. is on Tuesday. Is it normal to experience such discomfort after cryo surg.? The Dr. told me recovery could take up to 5 weeeks. I always value your opinion.
Thanks
Marion

Answer
Hi Marion,

Some people do get some brusing and swelling after cryo and it can take several weeks to work itself out.  Also some experience pain after the cryosurgery and this makes it difficult to tell whether the procedure has truly caused death to the neuroma.
This is not the most common scenario after cryosurgery but it certainly can happen.  Time will tell.

I typically will have my patients apply ice and in some cases we will start an anti-inflammatory medicine.

Many patients are pain free starting the first few days.  We are all different so speak to your surgeon and hopefully all will work out well.

Sincerely,
