Foot cracking

Question
In Feb of this year I severely sprained my ankle and also broke my 5th metatarsal.  I had an ORIF with a plate and 4 screws.  I have been noticing my foot to be extremely achy and it cracks all the time.  Also my ankle is still big around the ankle bone compared to my other foot.  Is all of this normal and will the achy and cracking ever go away.  Should I have my ankle looked at.  They didnt really do anything with the ankle once they found the break in my foot.

Answer
Hi Stephanie,

Typically after ankle fractures you should undergo physical therapy for more rapid healing and stregthening.  Swelling may be a problem that lasts for a year but you could also have some swelling on a regular basis.  I would see your dr and at least get a palin x-ray to make sure all is still in place and the cracking is not being caused by a problem.
