QuestionMy son is 26 and has had two surgeries to relieve pain caused by a tarsal coalition (resection). The first at age 17 had some success (pain was less for a few years). The second surgery was at age 22 with basically no pain relief. He had a cortisone shot once with very minimal relief. He has tried to modify his lifestyle to limit how much time he spends standing - but when he does need to be on his feet extensively the pain is horrible. He is not ready for surgery to fuse the joint yet - is there something else he can try to minimize the pain and inflammation? He is a teacher and coach so being on his feet is part of his job. Thanks for any advice you can offer.
AnswerHi Deb,
There are several options for pain associated with tarsal coalition depending on the location. I'm assuming that he has orthotic devices.
I have had success treating the pain associated with tarsal coalition using cryosurgery or CryoMax. This technique freezes nerves to give long-tern relief of painful foot and ankle problems.
