hip and ankle pain

Question
Hi Dr. Katz. I feel pain on my left achilles tendon whenever I go down the
stairs or whenever I flex my left foot.  It's probably been a month since this
first occurred.  Today, I also felt some pain on my left hip while walking.  This
hip pain I had already felt early this year, but after a few weeks, it went away,
but it seems like it's back.  I play badminton regularly and am currently taking
classes 2x a week.  I had one last night. I also replaced my badminton shoes a
week ago, as the old one I was using had been falling apart since the start of
the year.

Answer
Hi Sam,

With your activity levels you are straining the Achilles tendon.  You can put a lift in your shoe to take the tension off of the Achilles however, put one in both shoes to stay equalized.  Use ice.  If this continues I would see a podiatrist.  You may need orthotic devices.

Sincerely,
