Sharp Foot pain and Numb little toe

Question
Dr. Katz,
About two weeks ago I had a sharp pain in the middle of my left foot the made it difficult to walk, this lasted about a week. Once I even felt a pop in the middle of my foot and the pain lessened to a dull ache. Now my little toe feels numb. I have some feeling in it and can move it but it just feels numb. I am over weight and believe this is a major part of my problem but not sure what is wrong. My feet feel better early in the day but I am on my feet for 10 to 12 hours a day and when I get home they ache more.
Thanks
Robert

Answer
Hi Robert,

If you have numbness in the little toe you likely did damage to a nerve.  There is a nerve that runs behind the ankle and the tendons can be displaced and cause nerve damage resulting in toe numbness.  There are also similar problems that can occur on the top of the foot. If you still have the problem I would see a podiatrist for an exam.
