Question
I broke my small toe on monday when my horse stood on it. I went to the hospital and had it X-rayed where they said it was a small fracture at the base of my toe. Today it is blue, purple and swollen. I have not been able to walk on it since i did it as it is to painful but the pain is worse today. It is currently strapped next to the next toe but it is like a pulsing pain in it. I have been elevating it and trying to stay off it.
can you tell me why it is so painful and why it has gone more blue and swollen?

Answer
Hi Laura,

I would see a podiatrist.  When you have a crush injury to the toe you may dvelop and infection and you could also lose circulation to the toe.  These could cause increased pain and discoloration.  It also may just be the normal healing process but I would not take a chance.
