QuestionIn all of the communications regarding cryo for Morton's neuroma, the same 3 cryosurgeons are mentioned (Katz, Rampertab, and Cavazos). Why aren't more podiatrists around the country using this technique, especially since it sounds as though the 3 podiatrists mentioned in most of these forums have taught so many others how to perform cryoablation? Thanks in advance for your insight.
AnswerHi Jay,
There are hundreds of Podiatrists doing cryosurgery throughout the United States using various techniques. Myself(Katz) and my 2 colleagues have pioneered new techniques and moved the technology to a more advanced level with higher success rate. In addition, studies have been published. The advancements take time to infiltrate the medical community. In addition, there is a large learning curve when performing color ultrasound cryosurgery and significant additional equipment costs.
Cryosurgery has been performed for at least 20 years by pain management specialists for all types of nerve pain.
Podiatry adopted the technique for the foot in 2003.
Hope that helps some.
