Question
Dr. Katz,
I am a 48 yr. old female.  2 1/2 years ago I injured my left foot by stubbing my first three toes resulting in pain, tingling, numbness in first three toes, top of foot, side, and radiating above the ankle.  I had numerous x-rays, 4 different doctors, and finally confirmed with an MRI that I have a stress fracture of the second cuneiform.  With a good shoe the pain was minimal, but without a shoe on the pain and symptoms continued.  I had been treated with a cortisone injection, inserts, new athletic shoes.  My current podiatrist had me use the walking boot, but became painful, so I have been on crutches for 9 weeks, non weight-bearing and using the EBI bone stimulator for 8 of those weeks.  I have had a bone scan to confirm the diagnosis with also a bone bruise.  The podiatrist said this would be my only option for treatment, and if it doesn't work, that it may never heal, and I would have to learn to live with the pain.  I would like to know if there are any other treatment options should it come to that?  I would be interested in any information you have with similar concerns.

Respectfully,

Beth

Answer
Hi Beth,

I would consider physical therapy to promote healing.  In some cases a cast may be appropriate.  I would seek the opinion of another podiatrist.

Sincerely,
