Hi Dr Katz
My son recently started complaining about pain in his feet. I thought it was from football and just over use or the cleats he wears. but upon further examination of his feet I notice the same bump on the outside of both feel just before or at the arch. They are very painful to the touch, not soft but firm and it is hard for him to walk? What could cause this and what should I do to treat it?

Hi Lisa,

I would see a podiatrist for treatment which may include x-rays and possibly orthotic devices.  The bump may be normal but causing pain from the shoe or the bump could be abnormal resulting from abnormal foot position.  The hard bump could be normal bone with pain where the tendon attaches to the bone.
