QuestionI have had severe foot pain on the bottom of my foot (under my big toe) when I walk for about 7 months and over the last 2 months every step I take there is also now a severe sharp pain going through the top of my foot as well...I feel silly going to the doctor but not sure how much more pain I can take. I never wear high heels...either sneakers or flip flops in the summer...Uggs in the winter or sneakers. Any idea's??? Should I now go see a doctor??? Also, about 3 months ago I think I broke my baby toe (on the other foot) and it is still very big and sore and almost looks a little defored...can anything be done for a broken toe, or should I just let it heal on it's own??? Thank you for your time!!!
AnswerThe pain under the big toe is probably sesamoiditis. There are two little bones under the big toe which can get irritated from any form of excess pressure-even from lower heel shoes. Other causes may be increased activity and weight. Check out AnkleNFoot.com for additional info and visuals.
You can try a donut pad around the ball of the big toe to cushion it. Sometimes these pads are also called dancer's pads. Our web-store has examples.
If it doesn't quiet down with padding, ice and Advil or Alleve within 2-3 weeks then you should have it examined.
The broken toe will continue to heal and become thinner as the fractured bone heals itself-called remodeling. It may or may not straighten-it depends on how the fracture is healing. If the fracture was not a stable fracture, like a non-straight break, then the toe may heal in a new position.
X-rays will easily confirm both diagnosis.
Hope this helps
