foot - bone swollen and painful

Question
What could be wrong with my right foot? I'll try to describe where the problem is. It's in the bone (looks like a ball) on the inside of my right foot, just below my big toe. It is very painful and is swollen - at least double in size. I am 36 years old and in good health otherwise. It has been bothering me for about 3 weeks, but is getting noticeably worse. The pain generates through my foot at times.  I can bend my all my toes just fine. Any idea what could be the problem, or any suggestions? Thanks!

Answer
There are many causes for the pain under the 1st metatarsal phalangeal joint.   One of the most common causes of the pain localized in this area is sesamoiditis (inflammation of the sesamoid bone) or a sesamoid fracture.  The 2 sesamoid bones are integral part of the function of the joint and it would be beneficial for you to be evaluated by a foot and ankle specialist.  You will likely need x-rays to rule out a fracture.Try to wear a pad with a hole for the sore area and limit the movement of the big toe by wrapping it to the foot with a 1-2 inch ace wrap and take max dose of Advil or Alleve for 3-5 days-if that doesn't help-then visit a Podiatrist. If you are a female-wear soft gym shoes or similar shoe. No heels until it quiets down.

Hope this helps
Good Luck!
