Question
I suffered an ankle sprain in 2005.  I twisted my ankle after stepping onto a broken cement surface while carrying a load of about 60lbs.  Today I suffer from what seems to be nerve pain of varying degrees, sometimes while walking, standing, or just lying in bed.  I walk favoring by right leg because of this pain.  The worst pain has been an electrical sensation that began at the site of the sprain, traveling up the leg, ending at the right hip.  This was extrememly painful.  Also, since the time of the injury, my ankle and foot are often cold, and my leg, from just below the knee, down to the toes is often a dusky color. I have other varies pains to both legs, feet, joints, etc, I'm assuming due to the favoring of one leg.   I have had xrays, mri's, pt, and many examinations by varies doctors, but have been unable to be treated to aliviate these symptoms.  Early on, one doctor diagnosed a ruptured tendon and recommended surgery. Another suggested nerve damage.  This seems to make more sense to me now, especially as the type of pain I described is becoming more frequent and affecting more areas.  (The one to the hip was the most extreme.) Could you please offer an opinion on what I have described.  (At the time of the injury, the emergency room doctor stated that "this is not your garden variety sprain.)

Thank you for any help.

Mary

Please excuse me for changing to public-but this is a public forum and there is nothing here to identify you.
This Elmhurst, Illinois Podiatrist says.......
The shooting pain that you describe sounds like a damaged tendon or ligament.
Did they x-ray the whole leg to check for a possible fracture near the knee?
An injury near the knee may produce some of the symptoms you describe.
The pains you are describing sound more related to you favoring one leg.
Nerve pain usually feels like shooting with some burning or tingling.
I once had sciatica and it felt like someone was taking a hot poker and putting it through my butt(gluteals) down to the back of my leg and it lasted for 10-20 seconds or so.
Increased weight and activity will produce these symptoms also.
Get all your previous results together and go see a new Podiatrist who is Board Certified in Orthopedics.Make sure he/she is on staff at a good local hospital-because you may need a  neurological or vascular consult.
A fresh look may help you!
Hope this answers your question
