Question
Dear Dr Katz
I have been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, and have had it for about 3 years. My pain has always been around the inner foot area including the heel, arch and big toe. A few months ago I participated in a chiropractic study, where i was included in the group having their ankle and lower leg adjusted. I had not experienced stiffness in my leg before the study. I now suffer from stiffness in my leg and foot pain on the outer side of my left foot towards my little toe. My orthotics do not relieve this pain. Stretching the calf muscle provides some relief, but not for long. I had a cortico steroid injection a week ago which has resulted in no relief. Please advise if you believe this could be a new symptom of the plantar fasciitis or if this is a whole new problem that requires alternative treatment.

Thank you

Answer
Hi Fatima,

This does not sound like plantar fasciitis, however there could be some strain of the plantar fascia known as the lateral band of the fascia.  However, more than likely, you have strained the peroneal tendons which course in the leg and behind the ankle and into the lateral foot(pinky toe side).  In addition, it is possible that the nerve along the side of the foot was injured.  This is a branch of the sural nerve.  I would ice the area and take anti-inflammatories.  I would avoid excessive stretching.  If your pain continues, I would see a podiatrist.

Good Luck.

Sincerely,
