Question
I have been on swim team for about 2 months now and every now and then i would get this sharp food pain on my superior extensor retinaculum and inferior extensor retinaculum. It feels like my bones are scraping against it and it is very painful and achey. IT hurts t kick in smells and rolling my ankles dose not help. So I'm not sure what to do about it, because i have tried icing and it  isn't helping and swimming just makes it hurt more

Answer
Hi Jordan,

I would see a podiatrist and have an x-ray and see if the bone is normal.  An MRI would help with the soft tissue and bone and can easily show the retinaculum. You may be walking abnormally during the day and straining the foot/ankle.  You may benefit from orthotic devices that would help your foot and when you swim the pain may resolve.  Also consider physical therapy.
