ACHILLES INJURY FROM ROLLED ANKLE?
9/21 15:03:57

Question
I am a healthy 32 year-old male. I've played soccer my entire life and am familiar with the pain/injuries associated with rolling/twisting an ankle. Recenlty, I twisted my ankle in a bizarre fashion. rather than my foot rolling inward, I rolled it backwards. In other words, my momentum forced my foot to roll back underneath my ankle (front to back). I had tremendous pain and swelling as is normal and a week later most of the swelling and pain around my ankle (front) is gone. Here's the bizarre part: My achilles has begun hurting more throughout the week since my injury. I know that most achilles injuries occur from hyper-extension, but could I have injured it by compressing it (I'm imagining putting a kink in a hose). I certaintly didn't rupture it, but it is very tender and painful to even try to jog (I can walk with a little limp). Is this normal from an ankle roll? Should I be concerned that it's more than a partial rupture or strain? Other than rest, is there anything else I should be doing?

Thanks so much for your help.

Answer
HI James,

It is possible that you have an injury to the Achilles.  This could be seen on ultrasound or MRI.  In most cases, rest helps but also some type of walking boot to immobilize the area and as healing proceeds, I would look into some physical therapy.
