QuestionDr. Katz,
I was hoping you could answer a couple of questions for me. I am a healthy, 25 year old, but I have been experiencing toe numbess (primarily big toe but sometimes others). The numbess occurs after walking or standing for more than 30 minutes. I am in good shape, and on the low end of the healthy bmi range so I know this is not weight related. I don't run or do any high impact sports that would cause the numbess either. Simply walking in the mall or a store aggravates it or standing to wash dishes, do laundry, or cook. I have tried changing shoes, and I am wearing the correct size (one size larger than my dress shoes), and they are not too tight. Also, if I stand or walk barefooted I experience foot pain along with the numbess. That pain also occurs when I've been standing while wearing shoes for awhile. I don't know what would cause the numbess or the pain. I was hoping that you may have some ideas. It's just a cause for concern with me because my grandfather had toes amputated (diabetes-related). Thanks!
AnswerHi Jessica,
The numbness and pain could be from diabetes but not likely. It is more likely due to a condition known as a neuroma. This is an irritated foot nerve which can produce both numbness and pain. Other causes could be poor foot function requiring custom orthotic devices. I would see a podiatrist for an exam and evaluation. Ultrasound is helpful in identifying a neuroma.
