Screw & Plate removal from a Calcaneal Fracture
9/21 15:03:53

Question
I broke my calcaneus in March of 2003.  I had surgery with internal fixation using a plate and 9 screws 2 weeks later.  I was in a cast for 7 week then completely non weight bearing for 12 weeks.  At the end of the 12 weeks I was given the ok to return to normal activities without ever having physical therapy.  I taught myself how to walk again and worked on stretching out my ankle.  7 years later I am to the point of normal day to day work not hurting, but anytime I spend an extended period of time standing or walking even on flat ground I have pain and stiffness for days after.  I have been thinking about having the plate and screws removed.  Do you think it would lesson my pain and increase my ability to stand and walk around?  I am an avid wilderness tripper and love backpacking, biking and canoe trips.  The pain makes those that much more difficult.

This Chicago & Elmhurst Podiatrist says......

Dear Elizabeth,

I don't think that removing the screws and plates from your calcaneous will make a big difference in your foot pain-unless they are pressing into a joint or have moved. Unfortunately calcaneal fractures are known to cause these problems.Sometimes if there is spur or excess fibrous tissue in one of the joints-cleaning it out may help decrease the pain. Sometimes an injection and physical therapy may help also.
Keep your weight down and try an ankle brace with a custom orthotic.
Go see a good Podiatrist Board Certified in Foot & Ankle Surgery-they can give you your best options.
Make sure that a surgical recommendation has all the Pros & Cons and success rates-so you can choose wisely.

Hope this helps!

Good Luck My Friend!
