Possible callus on arches in my feet

Question
Dear Doc:
I have deep arches. Lately I've noticed identical red spots about the size of a quarter developing in the arches of both my feet (closer to the heel not toes). No pain or itch. The two spots seem to be getting firmer like a callus but are still soft (not dry and scaly like I would imagine a callus would be)?!
Why are the spots forming? My arches do not rub against the sole of my shoes.

Do arches fall?  Is this significant of a malady? I have been suffering from achy knees and lower back pain for 2 years now. My feet do not hurt. I'm a 37yr old female- occasionally i wear heels.

Thank you for your reply.

This Chicago & Elmhurst Podiatrist says.......

Dear Elizabeth,

If it looks like a callus it likely is a callus. Heels get callused by certain shoes, increased weight and increased activity, and the fact that we walk on them.
If you use anti-fungal cream and it disappears then it was a form of Athlete's foot-but very rare to have same spots in same area. Athlete's foot does not always itch.
Arches may fall as you get older,in pregnancy, injury and certain forms of arthritis-it's significant for those who are affected by it-but not the most common acquired podiatry disorder.
The knee & back pain can be caused by high or low arches, increased weight and increased activity.
Go see a Board Certified Podiatrist in Orthopedics who can diagnose your foot problem and treat it also. Treatment may be as simple as orthotics/orthoses and stretching exercises.
