QuestionMorton's removal surgery has mixed reviews and a lengthy recovery time. How does cryosurgery rate when used to alleviate the pain from Morton's neuroma? Are there patient reviews of the results of cryosurgery that I can see?
What does the procedure cost?
Thank you.
AnswerThis Chicago & Elmhurst Podiatrist says.......
Dear Roger,
We like to do the neuroma procedure through a small plantar incision of the bottom of the foot. This gives us direct visualization of the nerve since it is located at the plantar aspect. We find that the recovery time is about 2 weeks into a gym shoe and about 2 more weeks for the swelling and discomfort to disappear. This is an outpatient procedure. The cryosurgery would have a similar recovery time-depending if it is a top(dorsal) or bottom approach. Different podiatrists have different success rates and recovery times-depending on the procedure and follow up care. We do aggressive physical therapy following the neuroma surgery-which greatly decreases recovery time.
There are some podiatrists who do alcohol injections-which may have the fastest recovery time-depending on how many injections(done about one week apart). We also do those.
The success rates are about the same in both procedures in the hands of a qualified podiatrist-preferably someone with a minimum of 5 years surgical experience and/or Board Certification in Foot & Ankle Surgery or Orthopedics.
The fees will vary wildly from geographic location to location- if done in a hospital, surgery center or office and if physical therapy is done.
Discuss the fees with the podiatrist you are comfortable with-and get a second opinion.
Words of Wisdom- Make sure you have a neuroma and not metatarsalgia. Check our website AnkleNFoot.com and do a search for neuroma & metatarsalgia. Metatarsalgia is commonly misdiagnosed as a neuroma in the foot
Hope This Helps
Good Luck!
