QuestionI developed a hairline fracture in my cuboid bone last summer while jogging. The doctor put me in a cam and crutches for 8 weeks. When I go out I work as a high school football official with no problems. This Spring I began getting ready for the season and game and developed pain in my ankle. I went to see a different doctor and he said I had not rebroken my foot but had strained the ligaments in my ankle and now have a unstable ankle which will heal and should be wrapped. I asked him about the fracture and he said I had not broken my foot again. My concern is that I have some pain in the same area of my foot and it feels like it did last year. Should I go see another doctor?
AnswerThe cuboid provides a lot of stability and a fracture, even a hairline, can affect that stability and may even become arthritic. You want to visit with a good podiatrist to perform a biomechanical examination and evaluate you for custom orthotics. This will help regain that stability and stop that pain.
