QuestionI have a 3 year old girl. Very small. 34 inches tall. 25lbs. History of significant reflux and FTT. Her ankles/feet are overpronated. I've had 2 doctors on 2 separate occassions say that it is normal for young children to have overpronation and it is nothing to worry about, however, neither examined her. Recently, her daycare has had concerns with how slowly and awkwardly she climbs stairs. Again, doctor not concerned. She examined her hips, but not her feet. With her history, I am concerned that this has to do with her poor growth, and perhaps weak muscles. If it IS normal, at what age can I expect her to outgrow this? If she is still rolling her ankles in at say, age 4 or 5, would this be a worth raising the issue with her doctors again? Thanks for your help.
AnswerMichelle,
Unfortunately, many pediatricians write off what you describe and simply answer that she'll grow out of it. I'm happy that you realize that catching things early can have a significant impact in later years. I suggest you find a podiatrist with a focus on biomechanics (study of movement) and look into getting your daughter either into a custom orthotic, or even a low-profile brace, to manage her pronation. You'll find that she'll become more stable and will be able to do more as a result.
Best of luck!
