Question
Hello,

Eight months ago I slipped and fell and fractured my right cuboid.  I was put in a walking boot and non-weight bearing for almost 12 weeks.  I began PT at around the 8 week point.  I continued PT until recently as I am still at only about 60%.

I continue to have pain when I walk.  The PT did a cuboid whip manipulation which initially provided relief and the ability to walk.  I still have pain at a certain point in  my gait.  I have had an MRI and CAT scans as well as updated x-rays that show the fracture is healed.

My question is how long does it take to heal.  I still have tenderness to the touch and it feels as if something is out of place.  The PT thinks it is mechanical as when it is taped it seems to help.  Last doctor wanted to have me do a spinal injection for pain management.  I declined given that I am dealing with the pain with OTC meds.  I am able to "function" but cannot walk long distances, run, stand for long periods of time, or be on the floor with my children.  At the end of the day I have swelling and pain that makes me need to be off of my feet.  Any thoughts/information are appreciated.  I am in the Philadelphia area and am not sure what doctor to see or what my next step is.  I and the PT are at the end of the line.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Heather,

Your cuboid fracture is likely healed by now, however, there was significant soft tissue injury that occurred.  With the injury comes joint instability and pain.  I would recommend that you see a podiatrist for custom orthotic devices or possible consideration for a device known as an AFO.  These include Ritchie or Arizona braces.
