Question
hello Dr. Katz,
over the last few months, my right foot, specifically right under my right pinky toe on the front of my foot, has been giving me a lot of pain. the only way i can best describe is that it feels like a "tearing" sensation. i have previously torn a tendon and i knew what hat felt like and its the best comparison i can make. the pain had been growing in intensity and even a simple stretching of the knee would cause a great deal of pain. eventually the pain stopped but it has recently returned. i don't know what is going on with my foot and I'm took broke to visit my local podiatrist. can you give me any ideas on what this could be and whether or not there is something i can buy to help with the problem? any assistance is greatly appreciated. thank you.

Answer
Hi Dora,

A few things to check.  Look inside of your shoes and make sure there is nothing sharp or irritating hitting your toe.  Also, note if there are only certain shoes that cause the problem.  Check under your toe and make sure there is no cracking of the skin and if there is use some antibiotic and antifungal cream.  Otherwise, you will need to see a podiatrist if the problem worsens.

Sincerely,
