Question
I know the basic principal of building muscle is to actually 'injure' the muscle by lifting weights so it gets bigger after repairing itself.
Does this also hold true for tendons and ligaments?
I am in my 50's and still active in sports. I am currently nursing a 'runners knee' and a sprained ankle. I havent had these injuries in these spots before. When they heal, and I realise it will take longer at my age, will they be stronger?
I got the knee from doing hill running which I hadnt done before, and the ankle from playing soccer only the second time this year, wearing old worn out cleats.
I strained my achilles tendon several years ago, but once it healed I was able to run with no recurrence.
I have also read that some supplements such as magnesium can speed healing, especially if you are deficient to begin with.
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Gord,

Muscles do enlarge with weights but a sprained ankle and injured knee is likely to be further damaged with increased stress.  When they do heal they are often weaker because the supporting ligaments and tissues are more lax and they no longer hold the joint tightly.  In some cases you can get scar tissue in an area and that could make an area stronger.
