This Chicago, South Loop & Elmhurst Orthopedic Podiatrist of AnklenfootCenters.com says.......

Dear Christina

Sorry for the delay-received question while on vacation & still on vacation-but will answer for you.
Metatarsalgia is when there is more pressure on the ball of your foot on the smaller toe joints in the ball of the foot.
There can  be many causes for metatarsalgia, including being overweight, overuse, high arch or low arch, bunions and possibly osteoporosis. See our website at AnkleNFoot.com for additional info on metatarsalgia.
Sometimes a well made custom orthotic by a Podiatrist who is Board Certified in Orthopedics may help.
It may not be due to osteoporosis-but may be due to one of the above reasons.
If all the metatarsals are unable to take weight equally-then the longer metatarsal may fracture-since it is taking more pressure than the other metatarsals
Hope This Helps!
and
Good Luck!
