QuestionHello. I suffered a Lisfranc fracture/dislocation in a rugby tackle in May 2010. it was misdiagnosed as a sprain for 5 weeks before the MRI showed the true damage. I had surgery with 2 screws to secure my foot. In Decemeber, I had both screws removed. The surgeon says the integrity and structure of my foot is good. However, the pain is as bad, if not worse than pre-surgery. I have throbbing pain at the incision site extending over my foot. Often times the pain is shooting. i would rate the shooting pain at a 8 or 9. Oddly enough the pain shoots harder whne I take a deep breath, yawn, cough, sneeze. There was discussion of fusion depending on my pain level, but not to expect my foot to return to normal fucntioning, perhaps 80%. Do you have any advice or insight to what is going on , or if I may need to give it more time/MRI/arthritis already? I am at a frustrated loss. Thanks.T
AnswerThis Chicago, South Loop & Elmhurst Orthopedic Podiatrist of AnklenfootCenters.com says.......
Dear Tara,
You may have a trapped nerve in the incision site.
Unfortunately diagnosed LisFranc fractures/dislocations may have poor prognosis and anticipated arthritis and so undiagnosed may even have a poorer prognosis.
You need to get a second opinion from a Podiatrist who is board certified in foot surgery and has also done trauma work. Do not be afraid to ask how many he/she has done and the success rate.
Otherwise see an Orthopedist who has done a Foot & Ankle Fellowship. If they are just Board Certified in Orthopedic surgery-that may not be enough experience.
The good news is that the qualified surgeon may have you pain free-with minimal fusions if necessary!
Hope This Helps!
and
Good Luck!
