i just recently accidently kicked a lump of steel with the inside edge of my ankle and now have swelling and pain and only just able to walk on it. what might i have done to it

The ankle injury may be a contusion of the ankle-which involves breaking of soft tissue and blood vessels internally.
Try PRICE
Protect-Wear an ankle brace around the ankle and limit the movements that aggravate it.
Rest-Speaks for itself-perhaps the weekend & evenings when you are off-rest it.
Ice- Will help if it is still painful and a little with the swelling.  
Compress-Ace wrap  or ankle sleeve
Elevate-Will help if it throbs or swells at the end of the day.
