Toenail damage/ Fungus?

Question
I started walking 2-3 miles per day about two months ago. Tuesday I removed my toenail polish and noticed that on both big toes the nail had turned a whitish color from the top of the nail to about the middle of it. It looks really gross - I almost want to just cover them with polish again but I'm afraid the problem may worsen. Should I see a podiatrist? What would the treatment be?

Answer
These Chicago Podiatrists, Elmhurst Podiatrists & South Loop Orthopedic Podiatrists say.......

Dear Angie,
Do not apply polish on the toenail and see if you can remove the whitish color with gentle nail filling(the top layer of the toenail). Sometimes you can get a superficial fungal or yeast infection of the top layer of the toenail after being hit by the shoe repeadly,or by the heat of the shoe,or the polish,or even your nail salon.
Sometimes nail salons will pass on these infections. That is a reason we have started Medical Pedicures in a sterile environment. Bring your own instruments and practice anti-fungal care.
If these suggestions do not work-then see your Podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis.
Hopes This Helps!
