Question
Hello,
I was wondering if you could tell me if it is normal for my toes to be so cold after surgery? I had a hip revision done almost three weeks ago. The leg is purple when I stand. ( I had another revision of the hip 3 years ago and the leg did the same thing  - purple) so that is fine but never had the toes very cold. They feel freezing . Any ideas? Thank

Answer
Hi Deb, I am not very familiar with post operative complications from hip surgery.  Sometimes swelling in the surgical limb can cause discoloration; however, the toes should not feel cold afterwards.  If this continues, I would alert the staff at your surgeon's office so they can advise you on follow up.  Putting the leg in a dependent position or using warm water can help to increase circulation to the toes.  It may cause the limb to swell a little bit more but it would definitely help with the circulation to the digits.

Sincerely,
Dr. Leslie Johnston, DPM
