Question
Left big toe
Left big toe
Hello Dr.Tsatsos,

My name is Maria and I am 25 years old, a few months ago I noticed there was something growing under my left foot big toe toenail. At first it was small and I would pull it out, but then it grew faster and if I touch it I can feel it, so I know it is not dead skin. I tried to pull it again but it was a little painful. The tip sometimes gets like dried and I can pinch it off but I am guessing this could be something more dangerous.

I had a really bad fungus in that toe about 2 and a half years ago but it has gone away completely, also I have noticed some horizontal lines on both my big toe toenails, don't know if that is important.

Anyway, could it be something serious?? I hope I gave enough info for you to help me. Thanks!!

Answer
Dear Maria,

This Orthopedic Chicago Podiatrist located in West Loop 60661,Roscoe Village 60618, Ukranian Village 60622, Elmhurst 60126 & Bartlett 60103 says...
For the skin growth beneath your nail-I would recommend careful removal by a doctor.
The removal needs to be done without additional damage to the nail roots-which are further back. The reason that I recommend permanent removal is that it will continue to bother you, bleed when cut & could get infected when cut. The growth does not appear to be dangerous-but if it gets larger, bleeds, painful or changes color-get it seen sooner.
It is simple to do & should be minimally painful.
The horizontal lines may be leftover from damage from the nail fungus. Again the doctor who may treat the growth may have the answer.
See a podiatrist if you can.

Hope this helps & Good Luck!
