Question
Thank you Doctor for being available. I am middle age in good health.  I recently fractured my large toe in two places when a very heavy 300 lb item dropped on the toe. One fracture is at the joint closest to the toenail. My DPM prescribed a bone growth stimulator.  My question: are there side effects to using a stimulator in relation to the bone recovery?  I have heard of other side effects like nausea and migranes...  But as far as the bone recovery itself, can the stimulator, for example, overstimulate bone development? Thank you!!

Answer
Hi, Peter,

Thank you for writing with your question.  Sorry to hear that you're suffering with a broken toe.  I hope it heals quickly and fully, so that you can continue doing the activities you enjoy, pain-free.

As far as the bone growth stimulator, the device tends to be pretty safe.  The only contraindication I can think of is with areas of very fast-growing cells.  It shouldn't be used in an area where there is suspicion of cancer, for example.  Aside from that, I wouldn't worry too much about it.  I've not heard of it over-stimulating the bone growth of an area, and although nothing is impossible, I wouldn't be too concerned about that, especially if you are using it as directed.  If you have concerns, I would strongly recommend that you discuss them further with the doctor who prescribed the bone stimulator, as he/she knows your specific circumstances much better than I.  An online forum can be helpful but is not meant to replace a physical exam or face-to-face (or face-to-foot) connections.

I hope this helps.  And again, I hope that you heal quickly and with as little discomfort as possible.

Wishing you health, happiness, and peace,
Dr. Bodart
