Narrowing of the neck and pain in the hand and fingers
9/26 10:26:32

Question
I had an MRI done on my neck. They said that there was narrowing in the neck between the c5 and c6.
I now have pain, numbness and electrical type shocks from that arm and fingers. The fingers that are involved are thumb, index and middle finger. My had is also swollen and it takes me a while before I can close it. I also have Fibromyalgia.
I'm a male, age 54.

Dear Mr. Baldwin,

Although you did not ask a question, I assume you want to know what to do in this situation.
Your clinical description fits a C6 radicular episode, which means you probably have some irritation of the C6 nerve root that exits your spine and goes down your arm. If the pain is severe and unresponsive to conservative (= non-surgical) treatment, or if there is significant neurological deficit (partial paralysis of the hand for example), surgery might be considered. For surgery to be successful there must be a good correlation between the clinical signs and symptoms and the imaging on MRI.
Since you mentioned you suffer from Fibromyalgia, I would make certain the pain is really from the cervical compression and not from the Fibromyalgia.

Sincerely,

Dr. N. Rahamimov
