Question
I had an E.M.G performed by my Neurologist.I have a much slower reaction on my left side nerves tested. He recommended that I see a Neurosurgeon for a laminectomy.I have severe pain between c5 through c7,along with numbness on the left side of my neck, face, shoulder, arm, fingers.I also have constant pain in the middle of the back of my neck. When I try to turn my head to either side it hurts terribly. Even when I am eating if I move my head forward  it hurts!  I also have a narrowing of the spinal area in my neck as well. There is a sharp pain. I have heard that this procedure is common, but I am curious is it performed on the front ,or back of the neck?
I see the Neurosurgeon on June 6,2006.

Answer
Dear Mr. Brody,

A cervical laminectomy is performed from the back of the neck to decompress the spinal canal.
From the symptoms you describe it is difficult to understand the reason you were referred for this procedure.

Please consult with your Neurosurgeon as planned, as I think further evaluation is needed.

Sincerely,

Dr. N. Rahamimov
