QuestionHello, I am Manasa from India, my aunt suffers from severe back pain. She is of age 37. Her MRI of Lumbar Spine report says : Central & Bilateral paracentral disc protrusion at L4- L5 causing indentation on the thecal sac and exit foramen stenosis and compression of the exiting nerve roots.
Doc has suggested her just bed rest. What do you suggest doc? Its an awful pain
AnswerHello Manasa,
Thank you for taking your time enquiring about your Aunt. I am truly sorry to hearing about the suffering of your Aunt. It sounds to me that both your Aunt's pain and the results of her MRI are related. My suggestion for your next step is to find a doctor who is experienced in non-surgical spinal decompression. Have this doctor perform a consultation as well as a thorough exam including a series of orthopedic, muscular and neurological tests including an EMG if possible. You should bring copies of her MRI as well as any CT-scans and X-rays to this appointment. If my hunch is correct then she may be a candidate for non-surgical spinal decompression. This procedure is very successful for patients with bulging or herniated discs as well as degenerating discs. Often successful procedures are completed within 4-6 weeks with a rigorous flexibility and core muscle strengthening program. In the mean time we usually suggest that patients lay on either their back with a pillow under the knees or side with a pillow between the knees. I usually recommend bed rest for approximately 30-60 minutes followed by walking for up to 15 minutes. This is for the day.
Some patients find mild relief with non steroidal anti inflammatories, others do not. You must check with your doctor for any medical/pharmaceutical options. Although most only find temporary relief. Also ask your doctor if it is appropriate for your Aunt to lose weight and perform core strengthening exercises.
I wish your Aunt good luck and she should be proud of the work and interest you have showed her. May I ask you a small favor, can you please kindly rate my answer and consider to rate me as expert of the month.
Please let me know how it goes.,
Yours in health,
