QuestionHi Dr. Nusbaum
I'm praying that you can advise me.
My dad has gone to hospital yesterday and had an MRI.
The reason he has been admitted to hospital was because for the last few months he was struggling to walk; very wobbly on his feet. In the last week or so his left hand started going numb. Within 1 week he has become bound to a wheel-chair and his hand is totally numb now.
His MRI shows canal stenosis and slipped disc in the neck C4.
Is surgery only option, and could it make things worse? We are also confused as to whether any feeling will return to the hands. The condition seems to be progressing daily an I can't understand how this could degenerate so quickly?
any help and advice you could provide is very much appreciated.
Many thanks
Omar
AnswerHello Omar,
Thanks for reaching out to me. I just received your question today. I'm so sorry to hear about your fathers failing health. As far as surgery is concerned depending on which surgery your father has their may in fact be increased risk of the procedure. I urge you to ask your father's surgeon to clearly explain the procedure as well as the risks associated with it. Unfortunately without seeing the mri findings as well as examination findings of your father I am limited in how I can council you. I can tell you that I helped others with the same symptoms you have described with your father non-surgically and without medication in a few weeks.
